The True North mission

True North was founded with the goal of giving young Canadian keelboat talent the opportunity to race at the highest levels of the sport without constraints.

Without restriction or influence from national, provincial, or club level organizations True North can operate un-inhibited with a goal in mind: Canadian Youth competing at the pinnacle of keelboat sailing, and keeping them in the sport long-term.

True North works as a network to connect young talent with keelboat teams who are looking for crew and build programs. These crew race and train with True North, learning both the on-water and organizational skills that provide value to an owner, team, or program.

Our Vision

True North aspires to be a team built of talented sailors across Canada connected by their passion for sailing. By keeping young sailors involved in the sport after dinghies, introducing them to the world of keelboat sailing, they can thrive to the highest level they desire, while being supported both financially and through mentorship.

These sailors would be able to race with teams across the country, helping owners and teams succeed in whatever avenue of sailing they are pursuing - raising the level of sailing across the country, on and off the water.

2024

Currently, the team is campaigning towards the 2024 University World Championships, and the 2024 Melges 24 World and Canadian National Championships. Our goal is to compete against the best in the world - and prove that Canadians have what it takes. Last year, the team achieved top results in Europe and across North America - and we look to step it up for 2024.

  • Currently, the team is compromised of young (mostly 19-25) sailors from across Canada. Sailors are chosen to based on skill, attitude, sportsmanship, and dedication. We look to expand the team over the next few years, creating a network of talent across the country. Check out our athletes page here.

  • To get involved, reach out to us via our contact form. We welcome sailors, sponsors, supporters, and all members of the community to reach out and ask us how they can get involved in the team!

  • Beyond the goals of competing at the highest level, True North is dedicated to improving the sailing community in Canada. By introducing and improving young sailors in keelboats, it allows the team to create a strong network of young talented sailors across the country which owners, program leads, and boat captains can reach out to.

From week-night club racing, to local events, to the international stage, True North aims to build a base of competent young sailors who can contribute meaningfully both on the water, and off.

  • The team has two short term goals:

    1. To compete and win at the highest level.

    2. To get more young people onto the team, breaking the barriers to entry such as cost, restrictions from organizations, lack of connections, etc.

Long term, the team aims to scale up to having multiple competitive teams at the international level, while developing a strong base of young sailors to continue our mission.
